through STUDIOFLO; nordesign was commissioned to design and make a reception desk and privacy-screens for SHY treatment studio. the brief stated that the designs needed to take some inspiration form Japanese design values and had to be clean, elegant and functional, this turned out to be an ideal brief.
the reception desk had certain requirements for storage and space for office equipment as well as being ready to be tiled. to achieve this a timber frame was constructed, clad internally in 9mm birch plywood and externally in cement tile backer boards. the desk surfaces was completed in 18mm birch plywood with all corners mitred. a suspended shelf for printer equipment was made and fitted under the desk and through a bit of careful consideration the under-desk area was kept free of supports for more flexibility and movement for the user.
the privacy-screens needed to be three different widths [500, 750 and 1000mm], easy to clean and have the ability to be folded flat against the wall when not needed. due to the fact that the screens would be hinged and wall-hung, they also needed to be light weight. pine was chosen for the frames and the vertical slats were cut from 6mm birch plywood, these materials were chosen for their weight and cost efficiency. a 12mm spacer was fitted at the bottom, middle and top of the frame, the birch slats was then fitted alternately either side to create a shadow gap and let some light through.
